More than 100 illustrations are included in this handy identification guide to the 183 species and six varieties of native and introduced grasses that can be found in the subtropical Lower Rio Grande Valley of the southern Texas and adjacent northern Mexico.

Besides the illustrations, easy-to-follow keys to the identification of the grasses are provided. A detailed description of each grass is included, giving scientific and common names, identifying characteristics, habitat, and approximate size. An introductory section outlines the plant ecology of the Lower Rio Grande Valley and introduces the reader to the basic morphology of grasses. An illustrated glossary defines the technical terms used.

The book is designed for a wide variety of readers, including naturalists, teachers, students, resource managers, scientists, and interested lay persons who want to know more about this critically important group of plants.
